Defense is still necessary for me and my dog

I have a 120 pound "CG" German shepherd. I have been blessed to have him for four years now. He is a very obedient dog, he loves to run around until he is so tired. He is so receptive to being controlled or disciplined because he is able to understand that there are expectations on him. He is well fed and pampered with the necessary toys, treats and medicines.

Recently, there have been many cases of robberies in our neighborhood. I plan to enroll him in a dog scholl so that he can learn the attack command. I have other reasons for wanting to have him learn the command. Are there any reasons why he should not be trained for this one ? Is it a dangerous move?

I think your gut is telling you yes, you should do this. The only thing I would be worried about is making sure the trainer who teaches him is TOP NOTCH. Unless you have a history with the trainer I would get lots of references and don't be afraid to ask a million questions. Ask them about their technique and how are you going to teach my dog to not attack me? I think you are wise to have your dog learn to attack. I have a 130 pd. malimute and she scares people, but she is such a wuss, I should take her and have her trained too.

Good Luck!

Find a shutzhund trainer (and I know I didn't spell that right)

I agree with Monica - If your gut tells you it is a good move, then do it!

We have a german shepherd, who is very big and looks scary...yet he's really silly and playful. He'd be more likely to want to play with theives than attack them!

Sounds like a good idea to me. Why even Main Street is dangerous these days!

I had a shepherd mix for many years. I always felt safe with her because she was very protective & would scare everybody. I have 2 poodles now that would only lick someone to death so I really miss her sometimes. I think if you will feel safer and don't think that he will be a good deterrent as is, then I say you should do it. Following your instincts usually isn't the wrong decision.

Hi! If your dog barks at all, I would leave it at that, and avoid encouraging the dog to bite people (grab and hold) on command. You open yourself to TREMENDOUS liability by training the dog to do that. Ask your homeowner's policy agent how your rates will go up if you do that! If the dog bites someone, with or without encouragement, and it's discovered that you had the dog bite-trained, you could lose your home. I'm not kidding. What I would do is make sure your dog will bark at a strange bump in the night (some dogs don't.) Seriouusly, a large barking dog is the best deterrent to crime that there is. If you are really scared about bad guys busting into your home, get a handgun a take some training on how to use it. Why? By the time a really, really bad guy gets into your home, he's got a gun of his own, your attack dog is shot dead and then you are an easy target. Just my two cents but the statistics hold it all up. Be careful! Enjoy your non-biting dog!
